The Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV. It is built on the same platform as the Camry and was first introduced to the world at the New York International Auto Show in 2000. In 2001, the Highlander debuted in the North American market. It soon became the best-selling SUV for Toyota but lost that title to the RAV4 in 2006. The Highlander has been tweaked and upgraded over the years. In fact, Toyota just redesigned the SUV in 2020. As such, the 2022 version of the Highlander will be a carry-over model.
There are six trim levels for the 2022 model year. These are:
The higher trim variants come with more options and features, but they are all good picks. For instance, the L comes with tri-zone climate control, LE has LED fog lights, and XLE has a power moonroof. As for the XSE trim, it has leather interior options, Limited comes with heated and cooled front seats, and Platinum gives the owner a bird’s eye camera view.

As with many carry-over models, there aren’t that many changes to the 2022 Toyota Highlander. Still, the new mid-size crossover SUV deserves some attention. It has a roomy cabin that can seat seven or eight without making the passengers feel cramped. For example, the legroom available to those in the front is 40.4 inches, those in the second row have 41.4 inches of legroom, and people riding in the third row get 27.7 inches. The outside of the vehicle is virtually unchanged too. But, buyers do get features like auto-leveling headlights and 20-inch alloy wheels. And, of course, the 2022 Toyota Highlander has all of the best technology and safety features that Toyota offers. These items enhance the driving experience and protect drivers and passengers.
The 2022 Highlander has the same cabin layout as its 2021 predecessor. It features premium materials and has plenty of technology that gives it a high-tech appearance. Depending on what model you buy, the SUV is a seven or eight-seater, so there’s plenty of room for your family and friends. Also, they won’t be cramped up, thanks to the spacious cabin. When it comes to headroom, the front row offers 39.9 inches, the second row provides 39.4 inches, and the third row gives passengers 36.1 inches. As for legroom, people in the front get 40.4 inches, those in the second row get 41.0 inches, and the third row provides 27.7 inches. There’s also loads of cargo space in the 2022 Highlander. Sixteen cubic feet of space can be found behind the third-row seat, but the capacity increases to 48.4 cubic feet if that seat gets folded down. Then, if that still isn’t enough, the second and third rows can be folded for a total of 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space.
There aren’t many noticeable changes to the outside of the 2022 Highlander. It still has the sporty appearance of the 2021 model. The SUV does have some excellent exterior features, though. For example, it has auto-leveling LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, and optional twin-tip exhausts. But, if you’re looking for a way to make the outside of the Highlander stand out, even more, Toyota has you covered with nine exterior paint options.
There are different powertrains available with the 2022 Toyota Highlander: a 3.5-liter V-6 and a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. However, the V-6 comes standard and is combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The engine can deliver 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. With these parts, the 2022 Highlander can go from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 6.7 seconds. As for fuel efficiency, the mid-size crossover SUV has a 17.1-gallon fuel tank. It is estimated to get 20 city, 27 highway, and 23 combined miles to the gallon.
This version of the Highlander may be a carry-over model, but as you can see, it is really much more than that.
