Though the Toyota Tacoma has long been a class-favorite for mid-size trucks, a new competitor has recently emerged – the Chevrolet Colorado. Now, these two popular trucks are in fierce competition. However, as in any competition, there is always a winner. Between the Toyota Tacoma and the Chevy Colorado, which comes out on top? Let’s compare them side-by-side to find out.
Entry-level Toyota Tacomas are equipped with a 2.7-liter, 4-cylinder engine that makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, which is mated exclusively to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The base Colorado runs on a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque and either a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. Depending on configurations, the Tacoma can tow between 3,500 and 6,800 pounds, and the Colorado can tow between 3,500 and 7,000 pounds, or up to 7,700 when equipped with the diesel powertrain.
Even a short glance at the outside of these two trucks tells you a lot of what you need to know about them: the Toyota Tacoma is recently refreshed and offers a handsome, athletic, and modern exterior that hints at the modernity inside the cab. The Colorado on the other hand, looks outdated and is several model years past a refresh. Inside, the cab is dated in design, too. Though both trucks offer 7-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto as standard features, only the Tacoma offers Amazon Alexa connection, Sirius XM radio, and Wi-Fi connection as standard features.
When looking at driver assistance features, the Toyota Tacoma again has a leg up. Standard driver assistance safety features include a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, and dynamic radar cruise control. Additional available features on the Tacoma are blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic detection. In comparison, the only driver assistance features available for the Chevy Colorado are forward collision alert and lane departure warning, and neither come standard.
